North Mesquite coach hospitalized

North Mesquite coach Mike Robinson was in fair condition in the emergency room this morning at Baylor Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

No further details were available.

Robinson, 42, left Mesquite Memorial Stadium during his team's game against North Garland and was taken to Baylor. North Mesquite won, 33-14.

In summer 2007, Robinson was hospitalized with an upper respiratory infection that caused severe dehaydration. He missed a week of practice.

He is a former coach at Wilmer-Hutchins and Hillcrest.

23 seconds that will fondly be remembered in Garland

Garland's game-winning 92-yard touchdown pass play from Jared Barnett to Adrian Phillips with eight minutes left in the game took 23 seconds of clock time. I bet it seemed a lot longer to Duncanville fans and coach Jeff Dicus, making his home debut.

A play like that cries out for instant replay.

On the west side: Good bounce-back win for South Grand Prairie (27-14 over Arlington Martin), Rob Davies' first victory as head coach. Ryan Campos, filling in for injured QB Aaron Gautney, threw three TD passes.

A big sigh of relief from Arlington Sam Houston, which ended an Arlington ISD record 18-game losing streak by thumping Granbury, 62-16.

But Sam Houston didn't even score the most points of the AISD teams on Friday. Lamar beat Weatherford, 72-28. Eddy Peach is 99 away from No. 400!

Friday Night Insight - 5Analysis

Mesquite should zoom up our area rankings after beating Hebron, 23-14. No, Mesquite wasn't dominant, but you have to remember Hebron was coming off a stunning home loss to Wylie in its opener. Hebron hasn't lost two games in a row in five years. Hebron's pride was being challenged, but Mesquite still prevailed.

Mesquite has a lot of playmakers, with none better than Marcus Trice, the DB headed to Oklahoma. There are a lot of weapons for QB Luke Halpin to work with and the defense is pretty darn good, too.

Speaking of defense, Hebron is still as salty as they come. The offense will only get better as Justin Iwuji gets a few more notches in his belt. I wouldn't dismiss Hebron at 0-2.

Good win for Plano West tonight over what was thought to be a loaded Flower Mound Marcus. Plano West just couldn't get over the hump last week against Southlake Carroll but that's a promising win.

Over on the East side of town, it could be a long season. A lot of good teams would get spanked by Abilene, though. It's still early enough that Plano East could regroup and make a run.

It's a final: Mesquite 23, Hebron 14

Mesquite is 2-0 for the first time since its state title run in 2001

Hebron is 0-2 for the first time since its first varsity season in 2000. Hebron has lost back-to-back games for the first time since 2003.

Notes from the night in 4A

Lincoln played a 3A Roosevelt team that is young, but the Tigers still were impressive in the 47-0 win. Defense is always a strength for Lincoln, and it got stronger with Spruce transfers Donovan Bonner (FS) and Marc Leejay (DL). The offense also had a lot of talent before the Spruce kids came over, but receiver Daniel Mayberry gives the Tigers their best deep threat.

Rockwall-Heath: We thought this young program would make big strides this season, and the 43-27 victory over Sherman was a nice victory. I expected Rockwall-Heath to win, but I didn't think it would be that lopsided.

We know at least one thing about Denton Ryan. The Raiders can score. They have scored a combined 109 points in two games.

A week after losing a tight one to highly ranked Everman, Waxahachie had a nice 42-7 victory over West Mesquite. Carter moved to 2-0 with a 23-22 victory at Waco U, and the Ennis-Lancaster went down to the wire.

A pretty entertaining night. Any predictions for next week?

Final: Skyline 27, Kimball 0

Skyline's defense dominated the game. More later once I finish my story...

Naaman Forest 35, Lewisville 7 Final

Naaman Forest showed why this team should be considered among the area's elite. Forest pounded the ball and ran the clock with a pair of talented running backs.

Yes, we have the Oklahoma committed Jonathon Miller, but also the relatively unknown Demario Broadnax. They combined for 265 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

But the defense also did its job shutting down Lewisville in the first half, and then coming up with three huge turnovers in the third quarter.

By the way, let's not forget Derrick Osborn, a receiver converted into QB. He finished 7-for-10 with 92 yards and one touchdown pass. Don't miss next week's matchup: Naaman Forest vs. Mesquite on Friday at Garland's Williams Stadium.

Garland 23, Duncanville 20 Final

Classy move by Garland to run the clock out inside Duncanville's 5. Great game.

One play changed the outcome. Got to hand it to Garland's Jared Barnett and Adrian Phillips on a 92-yard TD play that almost is beyond description. Tough loss for Duncanville in coach Jeff Dicus' debut.

Hebron turns it over

It's looking very good for Mesquite with 2:03 left. Hebron just turned it over on downs at midfield.

Mesquite leads, 23-14. If this holds up, I'd be willing to bet Mesquite moves up a few notches from No. 20 in our 5A area poll.

Another big boot gives Mesquite 23-14 lead

Bradley Baladez boomed a 44-yarder. There's 4:18 left for Hebron to do something.

Garland in good shape, 23-20 with 3 minutes left

Garland leads, 24-20, with 3:00 left in the fourth quarter. Jared Barnett just scambled for a first down on fourth-and-8. Ball is at the Duncanville 16.

Plenty of music

Dan Ryan chimes in from FM Marcus-Plano West:

Props to the Plano West band for playing virtually every genre of music -- heavy metal (Metallica), old school pop (Jackson 5), classical (Star Wars) and urban (Fresh Prince) during this game.

Field goal gives Mesquite 20-14 lead

Bradley Baladez boots a nice-looking 41-yarder. There's 8:47 left.

3Q -- FW Nolan 17, St. Mark's 7

10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Mesquite strikes back, 17-14

On fourth-and-one, Luke Halpin found Darien McNealy on a short route. McNealy turned on the jets, then cut back for a 41-yard TD.

On the next play, Mesquite's Darnell Taylor just picked off his second pass of the night. Momentum has definitely shifted.

End of 3rd: Skyline 27, Kimball 0

Skyline's defense continues to shine. Kimball has just 73 yards of total offense through three quarters, but Skyline is pinned back at its own 6 to start the fourth.

Play of the year puts Garland up, 23-20

Got a play that should be in the running for best of the season. 92-yard TD pass from Jared Barnett to Adrian Phillips. First, it took a fantastic effort for Barnett just to get out of the arms of Duncanville pass rushers. The QB just heaved the ball as high and far as he could. Phillips outjumped a Duncanville defender, shook off a tackle and Garland is in front.

Garland sideline just went wild. You could see why.

Mesquite on the move

Mesquite QB Luke Halpin has snapped out of his temporary funk and is looking sharp again. He's just completed three in a row and Mesquite is driving at midfield as we start the fourth quarter.

It's still 14-10, Hebron.

Duncanville 20, Garland 16 end of 3 quarters

Defensive battle in first half, track meet in second. Garland scored with 15 seconds left in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Malcolm Robinson. Duncanville QB Larry Miller limped off on the final play of the quarter with what looked to be an ankle injury.

Plano West goes ahead

From freelancer Dan Ryan at Plano's Clark Field:

Plano West has regained the lead over Flower Mound Marcus thanks to QB Travis Wilson.

The junior registered his third rushing touchdown on a three-yarder where he headed to the right, changed fields and got some key blocks to put the Wolves up 20-16 with 5:47 left in the third.

He's also completed seven straight passes and has used six different receivers. He's 11-17 for 139 yards.

Hebron takes the lead, 14-10, over Mesquite

The second quarter trend has continued - Hebron is taking control.

Hebron just scored on a three-yard run by Darius Staten to cap a 13-play drive.

Earlier, Mesquite drove to the Hebron five but QB Luke Halpin was intercepted by Alex Norman. Mesquite hasn't been the same since - its next drive was three incompletions - none even close to connecting - and a punt.

Duncanville 20, Garland 10 late third quarter

The insertion of RB Trent Bausley helped Duncanville go 69 yards to push the lead back to 10 points. Bausley tore off 39 yards on his first carry and scored from the 1. Game is opening up.

Lincoln and Roosevelt: It's painful to watch

For those of you who can't help but look when you drive by a car accident:

The score is now Lincoln 41, Roosevelt 0.

In related news, I wish I was at that game that is now Ennis 23, Lancaster 21.

And let's give some credit to Coppell, which has been claiming to be underrated. Last week, it clobbered South Garland and this week it's up 27-0 on Jesuit.

Garland answers with TD drive

Garland trimmed Duncanville's lead to 13-10 with an 88-yard TD drive. Jared Barnett passed to Alex Updyke for an 11-yard TD. Duncanville 13, Garland 10.

Kimball can't catch a break

The Knights started their last drive at the Skyline 37 after a muffed punt. but thanks to penalties and poor passes, Kimball had to punt. Err, tried to punt. The kick was blocked, giving Skyline the ball at Kimball's 38.

Naaman Forest 28, Lewisville 0 3Q

I'm calling this game over. Lewisville started the second half moving the ball until DE Michael Daniels recovered a fumble for Naaman Forest and ran it back for a 65-yard touchdown. In the ensuing possession, a fumble during the kickoff led to Demario Broadnax's second touchdown of the day.

Duncanville 13, Garland e3

Duncanville went 55 yards in six plays on its first possession of the second half. Larry Miller was 5-for-5 on the drive, including a 10-yard TD to Gabe Castillo.

Halftime: Skyline 27, Kimball 0

Skyline continuing to roll thanks to Kimball mistakes.

All three of Kimball's drives in the second quarter ended in turnovers. The Knights were driving on the last possession and nearing field goal range, but quarterback Chester Riley was picked off by Skyline DB Kerry Nation. He returned the interception 62 yards for a touchdown, but the score was brought back thanks to a Skyline penalty.

Good numbers from Skyline quarterback Javia Hall. He's 8-of-11 this half with for 110 yards and two scores.

Kimball has only 50 yards of offense so far.

Mesquite 10, Hebron 7 at halftime

mesquite.jpgThis has been an action-packed half for just a 10-7 score. First impressions:

Mesquite QB Luke Halpin is a vastly improved passer. He's got a quick release and he puts some zip on the ball. He also has a great mastery of the system. Only drawbacks are the pair of sacks he gave up. He takes a deep drop sometimes, so those sacks were for big losses.

Hebron QB Justin Iwuji, a first-year starter, doesn't have near the game experience of Halpin. He didn't see an open receiver downfield once or twice and was quick to pull it down and run. But it's just his second start. He will get better.

Hebron's defense has helped keep this from being a Mesquite runaway. That's Hebron for you - always a great defense. That's allowed the offense to get its feet and make some plays late in the half.

The biggest play of the game so far is Darius Staten's fumble at the Mesquite one yard line. Mesquite punter Bradley Baladez has pinned Hebron at its one twice - that's huge. Hebron did pull off a 99-yard scoring drive on one of the possessions, but the odds of that happening again are remote.

It should be an interesting second half. Hard to imagine Hebron opening a season 0-2, but Mesquite has been impressive so far.

Lincoln continues purple pounding at Forester

I believe there is a UIL mercy rule that prevents me from describing all the details of this game so far, but we've gone to halftime with Lincoln up 28-0.

Former Spruce receiver Daniel Mayberry, making his Lincoln debut, has three catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. I don't know what his 40 speed is, but he looks like the fastest guy on the field by far.

FM Marcus takes charge

Update from freelancer Dan Ryan at Plano's Clark Field:

After falling behind 7-0, Flower Mound Marcus has taken control of its game against Plano West with three consecutive scores for a 16-7 lead.

The Marauders' last drive was a 14-play, 77-yarder that was aided by a roughing the passing call on Plano West that negated a JT Thomas interception of Brad L'Hullier. Stephen Hopkins has grinded out 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Lancaster 14, Ennis 7 (2nd)

Checking the score ticker, I saw that ...

I don't know if it will hold up, but I thought Lancaster might bounce back and give Ennis a tussle (although I picked Ennis to win.) Lancaster took some abuse after Carter beat the Tigers last week.

Lancaster has a lot of talent and should improve as the season progresses.

Duncanville 7, Garland 3 (halftime)

Eduardo Barajas kicked a 33-yard field goal on the final play on the half to cut into Duncanville's lead.

Determined runs by Keith Blanton and Adrian Phillips after catching short passes from Jared Barnett set up the field goal.

Garland spent much of the half backed up with poor field position, twice starting from its 1 after Duncanville punts.

Duncanville finally took advantage of good scoring chances created by field position, going 44 yards for a TD with 3:29 left in the half. Key play was a 16-yard run on a reverse by Chayse Joubert.

Skyline 27, Kimball 0

Skyline continuing to run over Kimball, with quarterback Chris Frazier scoring on a 7-yard QB keeper.

Kimball's had two plays from scrimmage here in the second quarter. Both were fumbles.

Lincoln-Roosevelt is headed toward ugly

Lincoln's defense figured to be its strength early in the season, and that's definitely the case tonight. It has shut down Roosevelt, which still doesn't have a first down.

Lincoln QB Don Canyon just scored on a 1-yard sneak to give the Tigers a two-TD lead. The two-point conversion was good with 4:54 left in the half.

2Q -- FW Nolan 10, St. Mark's 7

Defensive player of the week nominee alert:

Nolan's Ross Gallagher picked off his second pass and returned this one for a score to give Nolan a 10-7 lead over St. Mark's. There's nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Naaman Forest 14, Lewisville 0 Half

It's not fair. Naaman Forest has two good running backs and now the team showed it also has a passing game. Stephen Eggis increased Naaman's lead with a 31 yard touchdown reception. Lewisville finished the first half with 110 yards of offense and only six first downs.

Mesquite, Hebron are moving fast

Sorry for the lack of blogging. Both Mesquite and Hebron are wasting little time between plays. The only break we've had was between the quarters - and I couldn't blog because the refs waited to move the ball to the other end of the field before signaling a first down. I've got to stay on top on my stats and play-by-play or I could easily get lost.

Here are the highlights since my last post: Mesquite punter Bradley Baladez faked and ran for 14 yards. Only problem is he needed 16 for a first down.

Hebron's Darius Staten broke free from 16 yards out but fumbled just before crossing the goal line. The ball went out of the end zone for a touchback.

Later, Baladez pinned Herbon at its one yard line with a great punt. No problem. Hebron QB Justin Iwuji aired it out for Tyshon Nobles, who hauled in the ball at midfield, then had to put his hand down and spin around to keep his balance. The 76-yard gain set up Darius Staten's 1-yard TD plunge. It's 10-7 Mesquite with 1:48 left in the half.

Duncanville 7, Garland 0 (2nd quarter)

Larry Miller just hit Zavain Handy with a 3-yard TD pass and Duncanville leads Garland with 3:39 remaining in the first half.
